'Ello! Welcome to...Games That You Should Know! I, Termy, am here to share, yet again, another game that I've come across that you may or may not like depending on your tastes. This is for people that like strategy based games, but even still, I guarantee that you will quickly grow addicted to this former hit PC game even if you aren't familiar with strategy games. Before we cover this topic, let me give you some brief history on what ''Warlords'' is.
Warlords is a PC game franchise that was released in the year of 1989. Pretty old, huh? It was created by game developer Steven Fawkner and published by an Australian company named SSG. Following the incredible success of the first title in the series, SSG decided to release 3 more games (Warlords II, Warlords III: Reign of Heroes, and Warlords IV) in the years 1993, 1997, and 2003 respectively. Each came with its own unique expansions and content and were very popular amongst the older generation of people.
Fast forwarding a bit, we arrive in 2010. There is an iOS port of the game that's been released in the App Store (Sorry, Android.
) called ''Warlords Classic.'' Version 1.0 only covered the content in the first Warlords game which only came with 1 map, but the developers behind this new creation decided to add extra content such as more maps and UI enhancements. This led to the port's success. It is $5.99 in the App Store, but VERY much worth it. I've played what felt like 1 hour of gameplay which ended up being 2 1/2 hours. This game is one that will definitely keep you occupied for long periods of time.
Now that we've covered all the boring stuff, let's move on to the gameplay.
Your objective is quite simple. You are the ''leader'' of a faction, and your job is to control 80% of the territory on the map. HOWEVER, there are 7 other factions on the same map as you. Everyone has the same objective, so you obviously have to destroy the other factions before they destroy you. Sounds tough, right? Well, it actually depends on if you know what you're doing or not. If you get the gist of this game, you should do just fine. You start out with 1 hero, which is one of the most precious ''units'' in the game (we'll cover units in a bit). This hero has to immediately try and capture other castles around the area. Once you capture a castle, you get to have soldiers spawn there. Which type of soldiers spawn there is up to you. Of course, you also need to keep your soldiers well fed after a hard day's work, right? You may be wondering where you have to find food. ''Food'' is automatically supplied to your troops if you have enough gold. Where do you get gold? Capturing castles gives you an ''income'' of sorts. The amount of income varies per castle. You want to capture as much territory as possible in order to have the upper advantage, basically. More castles = More soldiers + gold + upkeep (food) + POWER!
Once you have a decent sized army, you can start invading other regions and stealing other people's territory. Note that this is easier said than done. You need to build up your armies using units. Units are the different ''type of soldiers'' that I mentioned earlier. Each unit has their own strengths. Literally. Strengths. The chance to win a battle for an individual unit depends on their strength value. It is measured from a strength value of 1-9. Weak characters have a strength of 1-4 while strong characters have a strength of 5-9.
There are also other ''structures'' cluttered around the map such as ruins, dungeons, and temples. I won't be going over these because I don't want to spoil too much (), but I'll let you find out about them yourselves. In a nutshell, they can give you buffs and help you out a lot throughout the game.
