A MMO like SAO in real life?

What do you think how long it will take to create an MMO as Sword Art Online?
I searched in the internet and found some new progress the world has which can bring us closer to this kind of technology:

What do you think about it? How long do you think it'll take?
And is that even possible somedays?

With the technological advancements coming out these days, it's totally likely to build an MMO for this sort of thing. The problem is though, they all involve controllers. If you remember, in SAO they use brain pattern movements and such, meaning the player controls their character through their head, not their hands. Brain controller technology however isn't far off either. A few years back they experimented with this idea and managed to have someone without arms play Galaga (yes, good ol' 1970's Galaga), with his brain controlling the ship's movements. Granted you could probably pull a first-person movement perspective with this, however the work to do something of this caliber would be incredibly complex. You would need to match up brain patterns with controller movements. Even in an open-world MMO, with a first-person perspective, they'd need to program in different brain patterns to match up, so that if you think of jumping, you don't end up running instead.

Plus, I have no doubt that such a game could be achieved, though the real difficulty I think would be the hi-res graphics. These screens may be small and pack great resolution for their size, but if you consider how in SAO everything was practically life-like, it'll be difficult to match that caliber of graphics unless they use something even more powerful than Frostbite 3 to do it.

The players killing each other and actually dying in real life though, is no joke. The batteries or power source embedded within the headset could easily heat up and fry your brain if the developers implemented this feature, or a method to work it. Knowing safety regulations though, they'll probably put a safeguard for this in their products should a company ever decide in attempting to make this move.

>all the women that fell for Kirito
>the unnecessary fanservice
Dude, you do not know harem until you read manga. SAO is a walk in the park compared to all the harem manga out there. Besides, there was only like 2-3 girls that fell for him in the anime, and the fanservice was there, but it wasn't constant.

The fanservice was constant, but only in the second half of the show. Asuna with all the tentacles. Leafa always has her buttocks bouncing.

What version were you watching with her buttocks bouncing? She had a gown on for the ALO arc.

I think I vaguely recall the moment when Asuna was with tentacles, but that part didn't last.

Wait, the internet was invented in the 1980s?
This should help you. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Internet
Nonetheless, I should do my part in keeping this thread "On the rails" by stating that while an MMO like SAO could happen, perhaps it'd be a little less spontaneous. For instance, perhaps the amount of players active at one time would be around a 200 and the space a player could go would be limited by difficulties such as Internet Connection(If it still exists in the future).

That's true, latency issues would be a nightmare if such a game could happen. And like you say, even if internet connection still exists at that time.
