NOTICE: This is a guide on how to set up a clan structurally, this does NOT condone starting a clan using the game's clan system.
Hello fellow players, if you are reading this, you are probably interested in how to start a clan. Well, I myself have been in a gaming community for Star Wars: Battlefront for over 4 years now. In this time, I have learned how to properly make a clan, and how to get it working and such. I also have learned what clans need in order for them to thrive and prosper. And so, I pass on my wisdom of clanning to you.
To start a clan, you obviously need to have some vital pieces, these are:
Structure: It is very important that clans have a structure, something that forms the backbone of the clan. Whether it be a group of people and there's one or more leaders, or multiple ranks and separate divisions and such. It is recommended you have some form of structure in the clan, so that your members know who's leader, and who to ask for help.
Many successful clans have multiple leaders involved, so that they can make agreements fairly, and so that there is more than one person's view involved in decision-making. A clan with one leader is usually not the wisest choice, however if the leader is not power-mad and rather generous to it's members, they can still be somewhat successful.
Ranks in clans also help to fill out the backbone of the clan. It also gives members something to look forward to to achieve greatness in the clan. The number of ranks for a starting clan shouldn't be too many, possibly around 3-5 ranks to keep it simple. As the clan grows and expands however, leaders may decide to make divisions within the clan, with their own ranks and positions. Larger clans tend to have around 9 main ranks, and then several other ranks within their divisions. However, this can all depend on the leader's decision in the clan.
It is also noted that clans should have rules. For instance, some clans may prohibit swearing, others may prohibit use of specific weapons, and some (if not all) will have rules regarding multi-clanning (the instance in which a member of the clan is simultaneously in 2 or more clans at the same time).
Outside Source: It is incredibly important for all clans to have some form of communication outside the game. Most clans tend to resort to using a web hosting site of sorts, or a forum board. Others may not even bother with websites, and will instead use an Instant Messaging client to keep in contact with each other. It's generally known that most IM clients built for gaming give users the ability to form groups or communities, thereby allowing for their clan to have an official webpage of sorts to show recruits what they're clan is like. Some clans may not even use either, and may use the game's community forum as their base of operations (sort of like how some of the clans here operate).
Pre-Existing Friends: This part is more optional than required, though I would personally recommend it. Clans tend to work out better if you have a group of friends already who would be willing to uphold positions in your clan. The bonus would be, you would have existing members that potential recruits could talk to to learn more about the clan, and in turn would help them decide in joining your clan. In this way, you would potentially have multiple leaders or high-ranking members in your clan already, meaning you would be all set for your clan.
With all 3 (or 4) components set up, your clan will be ready to receive members, and there will be little hassle in answering questions about your clan. Now we get to the more basic yet difficult aspect of clanning, recruiting.
Recruiting: There's multiple methods in recruiting for clans, but probably one of the easier methods would be to put up a recruiting thread on the community forum. This method is not always guaranteed to work, but it will definitely attract members.
Another method is to go to public servers and ask for users to join the clan. This way, the leader and the recruit can converse in real-time, and this gives the leader a more detailed process of recruiting. In this method, the leader has two options: either to recruit the member in the server by asking them to put a clantag on, or to request the player join the leader's server. If the leader requests they join the server where they can resume the recruitment process, the leader can inquire a more thorough process of recruitment, involving questions and such.
Keep in mind, recruiting players is difficult in a server method, as you will be looking for players instead of them looking for you. This means you may get many players who want to join, and some who will join you on the server, and in the end decide against joining.
Well, that's my advice for you fellow members who want to start a clan or want to set one up. You may take it as you like. Feel free to also ask questions here, or message me about it and I can get back to you.

- A clan name (and a clan tag)
- A structure of sorts (multiple ranks for users to advance in your clan, multiple leaders, but we'll get into that later)
- An source outside the game to connect with other players (e.g., clan website, IM client, etc.)
- (Optional) A group of pre-existing players who would be interested in joining/leading your clan
