But am I screwed? At least for getting the first weapon without upgrades? Are the upgrades all gems? Just like the gun?

Upgrades costs Gems unfortunately, but you can reset your account, grind more gems, and restore your stuff to upgrade/buy the CLC. and If you need more gems, Reset and grind some more.
How would I reset? I'm using amazon appstore and using android device, and don't say cloud please, because when I try to login to amazon for cloud, it tells me incorrect password/email, when I've changed the password dozens of times, and I know the email.

Your Kindle already has cloud, its just renamed as "Whispersync" You can turn of Whispersync and clear any pg3d data (do not uninstall PG3D) if you want to restore your weapons, turn on whispersync again in the settings/applications/Amazon GameCircle settings.
No, I don't have a kindle, I'm on a Samsung tablet, and using amazon appstore, and when I sign into amazon it tells me incorrect password.

Well thats stupid. Why not just use the Android App Store? (Google Play) instead of Amazon?
And why are you using the Amazon Appstore on an Android device in the first place?
When I install it on Google play, it gives me error 194, and I tried clearing cache and stuff, I even hard-resetted it, And I used it because Terraria was free on Christmas, Oh, and I fixed the couldn't login error, And I cleared data while it was saved on whispersync, I did tutorial, just what is a good way to level up to get gems?
