This is not scary.If you want something scary,i'll tell you guys a story about a pokemon version.
In the start,its exactly like pokemon red,blue etc.But you start with a pokemon called "ghost"and ghost has only one attack,called curse.When ghost uses it,the screen becomes black and then:The enemy pokemon is gone...After beating a trainer,you will not find the character anymore,you will only see a thumbstone where he/she was.After beating the elite four the screen becames black and then a message appears "many years later"you will find an old man(you),at the home where the game starts.if you go to the second floor,the screen becames black and characters/pokemons will appear in the order that you "killed" them.then,you will receive a message:"ghost wants to fight!"You cant,run,use items or change pokemons,its you against ghost.you have one attack called "scruggle",it wont have any effect on ghost and you lose a little health.you you are very low on heath,the following message appeared"ghost used curse!"then the screen becomes black and nothing more happens.Ghost has killed you.
Plus, the lavender town theme song plays during all the game.

I think one of the scaryest things I have seen in a kids game would have been that one dream sequence from the legend of zelda twilight princess game... also in earthworm jim (first game) there are quite a lot of strange things like this one boss "Major Mucus" you have to slam into him while bungy jumping over water where a creature waits to chew you to bits

and this other boss "Doc Duodenum" that's a gross artery that throws bile at you...
AND when you defeat Queen slug for a butt, her front body explodes into a pile of organs... (couldn't find any pictures, but yea.)
